Grabbe, Lars C.
This paper examines the intersection of fortification architecture and ruin theory through the lenses of authenticity, paradox, and reflection. Fortification ruins, as remnants of military architecture, embody a transformation over time, resulting from abandonment and decay. The Moselle Position, a series of fortifications built by the German Empire, serves as a case study, illustrating how these structures have transitioned from functional military installations to modern ruins. The concept of authenticity is explored not as a claim to originality but as a reflection of individual encounters with ruins, highlighting the emotional connections that arise during exploration. The paradox of restored versus open ruins is discussed, emphasising the tension between the spectacle of restoration and the authentic experience of decay. Finally, reflection is positioned as a critical tool for understanding the historical significance of ruins, linking them to broader narratives and historic contexts. Through this analysis, the paper contributes to a nuanced understanding of ruins as complex entities that provoke both aesthetic appreciation and critical inquiry.

The environmental movement of the 1960s and 1970s was constituted in part by ecologically conscious architecture. The value of architectural design was considered in relation to actions that support the recovery of endangered ecosystems and the future survival of the human species. Contemporary hyper-architecture, which incorporates formal and performative principles through the use of computation and indexing, no longer directs ecological awareness exclusively to moral decision-making. Rather, this awareness is incorporated into a way of thinking that recognizes the pervasive issues of ecology, environment, and the use of resources but as generative potential for the design of architecture itself. One consequence of the emergence of ecological hyper-architectures is the need for a discourse that explores the problem of values that occurs between the realm of ethics and the realm of architectural production.

But this situation actually leads to the question of how the links between architecture and technology have essentially been constituted. The relationship between architecture and technology is based on a number of different perceptions and conceptions of the complex of technology, and it is indeed nuanced. The obvious results of the intermingling of architecture and technology are, for example, machines for living, the realization of machine aesthetics, integrated sustainable energy generators, and so on. However, the emphatic connection between architecture and technology is not a curious phenomenon, but is due to the vibrant events that are the encounter with technology.

Drawing on object-oriented philosophy and related ideas such as actor-network theory, this research explores some of the key aspects of how such connections occur. One of these aspects concerns the notion of allure, which refers to the situation in which, when we encounter things, they become an issue for us. Beauty, style, and morality are suggested as three variants of allure or causation. Technology is present in countless forms of machines, devices, and industrially produced goods. In the case of allure, the qualities of entities somehow give way to their underlying forces.

Read the Article here:

Architecture-Technology-Relations: Aesthetics, ethics, and the metaphysics of entering alliances (2014)

Our perception of what is meaningful tends to change. It is clear that architecture and the built environment are valuable. We can use objective formulas to calculate a building’s value by comparing construction or maintenance costs with sales or rental income margins. The figures recorded in accounts can testify to the value of architecture. This may be a rather dull example, though. Nevertheless, it provides evidence for addressing the question of architecture’s value, which seems strangely underdeveloped. Due to the inherent nature of architecture — its concrete and representational forms, functionality, technical ingenuity and cultural and social context — discussions about architecture and its relationships often diverge. If we assume that the value of architecture is an obvious aspect of its existence, we miss out on a crucial discussion.

architektonische Topographie und gebaute Landschaft;

parametrisch generierte Architektur;

reagierende und strukturell veränderbare Architektur.

Grünkranz, Daniel. 2013. Architektur und Bewegung: Mensch-Architektur-Beziehungen im Wirkungsfeld architektonischer Systeme. Hamburg: Verlag Dr. Kovac
