Urban Ideas Competition Michelangelostrasse Berlin

 

Berlin’s population is growing and the city is in need for additional living space. City districts are therefore investigated for their potential to establish more residential buildings. In Berlin’s district Pankow the housing areas north and south of Michelangelostrasse with their building structures dating from the 1950s and 1970s were indicated as such a potential space. The project proposes new buildings north of Michelangelostrasse, which are placed and formed in the direction of 30° outgoing from the existing row of houses.
The selective densification guaranties the preservation of local relations between the buildings. At the same time, green and open spaces receive a court-like circumvallation and appear more appealing. The new buildings south of Michelangelostrasse are formed organically along an existing row of trees which become integrated in a new Boulevard. The urban plan allows for the incorporation of open spaces, traffic networks and the utilization of the ground floor for public use.
