Topos and Astra, Rethink Athens Competition

 

The project addresses the redesign and revitalization of central Athens, with the dual aim of preserving the multifaceted character of the city center while strengthening its public spaces and commercial infrastructure. Historical traces and architectural landmarks from successive eras define the city’s identity alongside open hillscapes that rise within the urban fabric, forming a counterpoint to dense quarters. Drawing on this condition, the proposal establishes a new topography – an artificial landscape set against the built city. This terrain generates new spatial qualities for public life and organizes a restructured urban program. The plan is reinforced by expanded public transit offering an alternative to private cars. The area includes Omonia Square, Dikaiosynis Square before the university, and Panepistimiou Avenue.

Topos: The topography links key public spaces, strengthens existing conditions, and opens new settings for urban life while hosting amenities and civic uses. It engages landmarks and introduces a new focal element, aiming to enable active public life.

Astra: A coordinated lightscape gives the area a distinct night identity and improves safety and visibility. A sequence of spotlights, streetlights, and installations forms a luminous band along the project corridor, evoking a field of stars.

This urban strategy enhances walkability and supports economic activity across the center. The public space accommodate markets, events, and daily use, encouraging social interaction. The connections between squares improve orientation and accessibility for residents and visitors alike, reinforcing the coherence of the urban fabric while respecting its historical layers and contemporary needs, and ensuring resilience and future adaptability.
